Election 2010 Britain Votes
59Election 2010
Britain Decides
On Thursday May 6Th 2010 the people of Britain go to the polls to elect a new Government and if recent opinion polls are correct it could prove to be one of the closest races for Government ever in British history.
In a country that is just coming out of recession and where politicians have lost the trust of the people because of the expenses scandal, the people of Britain have a lot to think about before they mark their crosses next to the candidate of their choice on the ballot papers.
There are three main political parties in the chase The Labour Party the present Government The Conservative Party the present opposition and The Liberal Democrats who share the opposition benches with the Conservatives.
There are also many minor political parties including The Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru Party(Wales), The Green Party, The British National Party and The UK Independence Party.
Live Televised Debate
The Leaders Debate
For the first time in British Political History the three main party leaders agreed to debate the election issues on national television and they took part in three live television debates which were watched by millions.
Before the televised debates opinion polls Suggested a conservative Government with 39%of the votes Labour in Second place with 33% and the Liberal Democrats third with 17% of the vote.
The Live debates changed a lot of public opinion and Nick Clegg gained the most prestige from the three shows, this has changed the course of the election which could now according to opinion polls lead to a hung parliament with no party gaining overall control.
After the debates opinion polls suggest that the Conservatives are on 35%, Labour are on 28% the Lib/Dems are on 27% the smaller political parties are on 10%
With everything still left to fight for and under a week to go before Britain decides, the three main political leaders are touring the country trying to woo the electorate into giving them their vote.
Gordon Brown
Gordon Brown
Britains Present Prime Minister took over from Tony Blair as head of the Labour party and the country in June 2007
Before assuming his Role as Prime minister Gordon Brown was Chancelor of the exchequer for over 10 years, Longer than anyone before him.
Weak points.
Mr Brown is not a charismatic man and has difficulties dealing with people, he seems uncomfortable in public situations and looks out of his comfort zone when making political speaches.
Strong points
Mr Brown is a numbers man and his international dealings concerning the credit crunch brought him world wide acclaim.
David Cameron
David Cameron
Britains Present Opposition Leader took over the role as leader of the Conservative party from Michael Howard in december 2005 after the Conservatives lost the General election.
Before becoming leader David Cameron was a Special Adviser to Norman Lamont, and then to Michael Howard. He was Director of Corporate Affairs at Carlton Communications for seven years.
Weak Points
Mr Cameron comes across as being smarmy and over confident but leaves people wondering if he really believes in what he is saying, and he always jumps on the latest band wagon condemning or supporting according what the majority of people believe.
Strong Points
Mr Cameron is self confident and a good public speaker, he has been an honourable opponent to Gordon Brown as leader of the opposition in his five years as leader.
Nick Clegg
Nick Clegg
The Lib/Dem leader since December 2007 Nick Clegg took over from Sir Menzies Campbell after his retirement.
Before he became leader of the Lib/Dems, Nick Clegg was elected Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hallam in the 2005 general election and became the Liberal Democrats' Home Affairs spokesperson in 2006.
Weak Points
Mr Clegg is relativly an unknown qauntity in the election race, The recent TV debates may have pushed his popularity up but his policies have been ridiculed by some of the National Newspapers.
Strong Points
MR Clegg is an excellent public speaker and comes across to people as confident and trustworthy, his ratings soared thanks to the tv debates and he brings a fresh face to British Politics.

Jimmy - what is the way forward if indeed the parliament is 'hung'? Another election or do they try to form coalition gov? FOX News televised the third debate over here and I found it interesting, but inconclusive. Good Luck on sorting it all out!!
God help this country if Cameron gets in. Ton't people see he was switching all these years in his opinion which means just to please people to get their to glorify himself. That is not this is all about. At the end MT the country was flat with 5 million unemployed. It it will happened again. Round here, where I live, Labour built every school around. These schools were from the beginning of the 20th century and more than dilapitated. I think they done so much for the people that they should remember and be grateful and vote them back again.
Hi Jimmy
I spotted the deliberate mistake - if you try to vote on 5 May you'll be a day early and have to come back - Thursday is May 6!
Amber:)
Thanks Jimmy for handicapping the race for an interested but not too knowledgable Yank like me. You filled in a lot of blanks for me and I'll be watching with interest on Thursday as what happens over there affects us mightily over here. Thumbs up up up
