Lower Back Pain

Lower Back Pain

At some point in our lifetime around 80% of us will suffer from some form of lower back pains. Second only to the common cold as the reason for most man hours lost in the workplace, lower back pain has many different causes and it can be a symptom of an underlying disease, it is one of the most common reasons people pay a visit to their doctor or even to hospital, Doctors usually refer to back pain as acute if it has been present for less than a month and chronic if it lasts for a longer period of time.

Back ache can be a reccuring problem, and can hit suddenly out of the blue one minute you are walking along the street and you turn to talk to someone and click, you can hardly walk, as the pain shoots into your lower back and down your leg and every movement hurts.

Easing The Pain and Prevention of Lower Back Pain

When Back pain strikes the pain makes it difficult to do anything, it is sore when you sit down, it is sore when you stand up and if you think that you will be more comfortable lying in bed then you have got another thing coming. Painkillers do help a little bit but the pain is always there and ready to strike at any movement, the best that you can do is to try and find the most comfortable position and try to stay in that position.

Getting a Good Nights Sleep

Contrary to popular belief, laying flat on a hard matress may not be as good for your back as once thought, recent studies proved that people who slept in softer more comfortable beds suffered less back pain than those who slept on harder beds.the way your head rests on your pillows can also play a part in easing lower back pain, If you sleep on your back try not to have your pillows too high , try to keep your head in alignment with your spine, if your pillows are too high your chin should not be pressing towards your chest. If you lie on your side your head should not curve toward your shoulder.

Keeping your head in line with your back should help ease some of the pain and it is also a way to help prevent Back ache in the first place.

Good Posture

Spending hours every day sitting at your computer can really take its toll out on your back, when sitting ensure that your back is against the back of the chair with both feet flat to the floor, if the chair that you use doesn't allow you to use the backrest use a lumber pillow instead.

Work Those Abdominal Muscles

If you have strong core muscles(abs) it can help prevent injury to your lower back, doing a few abdominal exercises once or twice a week can dramatically reduce the chances of back ache,

Eat Your Greens

Since our early years we have been taught that calcium gives us strong bones, and recent research shows that vitamin K is also essensial in the developement and strengthening of the bones,Vitamin K helps calcium deposit into the bones making them denser and stronger, Spinach, Broccoli, Parsley are known to contain vitamin K as well as Olive oil, soy bean oil and canola oil.

Baggage Handling

If your Purse is too heavy it can put a lot of strain on your lower back, especially if you carry a short handled purse, using a bag with a long strap that can go from your shoulder across your chest to the opposite hip spreads the weight more evenly, easing that stress, if you are loath to stop using your favorite purse then change the hand you are carrying it in every few minutes.

Kinetic Lifting

Learning the art of Kinetic Lifting is essential for the health of your lower back, back straight Knees bent and lifting an object from the knees, will save many problems further down the line, if something is too heavy don't try to be a super hero and ask for help.

Great tips, thanks!  I'm sure that mine won't be completely cured though as long as my toddler is constantly attached to my hip and wants carried around.  Oh well, he won't be a baby forever.

When I was in college, I hurt my back. The muscles seemed to tighten up a bunch. They prescribed pain killers (vicodin) and muscle relaxers (soma). It didn't really get better until I was able to start stretching my hamstrings regularly and doing situps. Now, my back will hurt from time to time which seems to be a reminder that I'm getting too fat. If I push back from the table and lose a few pounds, the pain goes away:)

thanks guys, children are the cause of alot more pain than backache lol, blessedmommy .

Paul I too hurt my back when I was in my early twenties and it is a recurring problem, keeping your weight down is a good start and situps do help so long as you don't over do them, thanks for sharing......jimmy

This is a very important Hub. Back pain and stiffness led me to the martial arts originally. The stretching and flexibility exercises of it did wonders - as did quitting restaurant management at the time. :)
