2006 Grand National (full race)
The Grand National:
On Saturday the 5th April 2008
40 Horses and 40 jockeys will line up for the most famous and the most controversial horse race in the UK; The Grand National at Aintree is not just a horse race, it is a battle of will and survival for the horses (33 horses have been killed in the race since 1945). 4 miles 856yds, 30 fences this gruelling race takes it's toll horses fall and jockeys drop from the first fence to the last.
The fence-building programme at Aintree starts approximately a month before the Grand National meeting is run, with spruce sourced and transported from the Lake District. The total annual cost is about £20,000.
The least number of horses to complete was two, in 1928: Tipperary Tim and Billy Barton (who remounted). In 2001, when Red Marauder beat Smarty, only four horses completed, two of these being remounted.
The biggest field occurred in 1929 when 66 runners faced the starters - a record number for any horse race ever. The smallest field was in 1883 when just 10 faced the starter.
Jenny Pitman is the only woman to have trained a Grand National winner, capturing the race for the first time with Corbiere in 1983. She succeeded for a second time with Royal Athlete in 1995 and finished second with Garrison Savannah in 1991.
By far the most successful horse in Grand National history was RedRum, the only horse to win three times, in 1973, 1974, and in 1977. He also came in second in 1975 and 1976. On The 18th October 1995, Red Rum suffered a stroke and sadly he had to be put down put down, RED RUM was buried, at Aintree's winning post

I always think that this is a silly race to bet on, and too much fuss, etc. Then I'm glued to the television.
