A SCOTTISH CHRISTMAS

The Celebration of christmas is a new thing in Scotland even though we have had a very active Christian society which can be traced back to the year 565.

It was illegal to celebrate Christmas in Scotland for over 400 years and it only became a public holiday in 1958.

A traditional Scottish Christmas is based on how,the Americans and the English celebrate.

The Scots New year was the main holiday in Scotland and Santa Clause came to visit on Hogmany(new years eve) with gifts for the children.

In many parts of the Highlands they folllowed the Julian Calender and on January 12th the boys would celebrate the New Year and the girls would celebrate Halloween.

John Knox Scottish Protestant leader was responsible for Christmas being made illegal in Scotland in the 1580s,as Christmas was of "Papist origin".

That's very interesting, Jimmy. Even though it was illegal before 1958, did families quietly celebrate it anyway, within the confines of their own homes? Was the law strictly enforced?
